Final Report

Evaluating the Internship

Now that I have completed my internship, I would like to evaluate my experience with Provo Parks and Recreation. I feel like I have accomplished a lot during this summer at The Center. It gave me a very accurate perspective on what it would be like to work in the recreation service and event planning industry. I learned that if you want events to go smoothly, you need to plan far in advance. I also learned from example how to delegate and use the resources around me that are available to get big jobs done. If I could change anything about this experience, I would change the season that I interned for this company. Even though summer was busy, I think that the best time of year would be to work in the fall/winter because of all of the holidays.

In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to evaluate the agency. Like any company, this one has strengths and weaknesses. Some of its strengths are cleanliness, organization, and strong leadership. Some of its weaknesses are low resources, lack of funds, and not enough variety in the type of activities/programs/events offered. Based on this, I would recommend that interns should continue to use this agency.

In the future, I plan to work full time for the military as my career. I know that the experiences that I had in this internship will contribute to my success in the future as a leader in the army and because there are many opportunities for recreation experiences in the military.

Evaluating the RMYL Program

Also, now that I am done with my educational career at BYU and in the Recreation Management and Youth Leadership Department, I would like to evaluate my experiences in this program as well. I feel that I have done well in meeting the overall Recreation Management and Youth Leadership program learning outcomes as a major in the department. Below, I will list each outcome and describe the ways that I have met these objectives.

-Design, implement, and evaluate meaningful leisure experiences - I have had a wide variety of experience in this area through my different courses in the RMYL program and because of my internship. Because of these things I have been through the designing/implementing/evaluating phase of leisure activities many times.

-Demonstrate excellence in analytical thought, oral, and written communication - Because of the different assignments that I have been required to complete in my variety of courses, I feel that I have learned a great deal and am now good at things like analytical thought and oral and written communication.

-Articulate, utilize, and be informed by the philosophies and theories of recreation and leisure - Through participating in this program at BYU, I have been amazed to learn how much there really is to recreation and leisure. There are many theories that I have been able to put into practice.

-Contribute to the well-being of individuals, families, the Church, and communities - I have had many opportunities to contribute to the well-being of others through service activities and other local opportunities in the area.

-Lead and inspire others through effective interpersonal skills and positive relationships - Through my experiences in this program and my experiences in the military, I have been given many opportunitites to lead and inspire the people around me. It does not always come easily, but it definitely gets easier with practice and an increase in experiences.

-Grow spirituality, build character, and respect diversity - Being at BYU has helped me grow spiritually and build character. I have learned to respect diversity as well being surrounded by so many great people through work and school.

-Develop key management skills - I think I learned this one best just by being surrounded by great management examples in my schooling and my work (including my internship). Sometimes the best way to learn is just by watching others, do what they do, and then fix your mistakes.

Capstone Project

When I first began my internship with Provo Parks and Recreation, I thought our big event for the summer would be for the Fourth of July. However, I quickly learned that the big events for the summer would be the Utah Lake Festival and Pioneer Day. I soon figured out that several large props would be needed for these events. I'm good with my hands and really enjoy building things so I decided to do this for my Capstone Project.

The Utah Lake Festival:

Provo Parks and Recreation had several booths at the Utah Lake Festival, but I focused on the fish game booth. I constructed two large pieces of wood, drilled several holes in each, and painted the boards with ocean scenes. I then helped run these booths at the Utah Lake Festival.

Pioneer Day:

This holiday is huge for Provo Parks and Recreation. There were tons of activities and games and we had an amazing turn out.

For this activity I was able to build many things...

I built a jail out of PVC pipe, which I spray painted black:

I built a mine shaft:

I also cut large boards and painted buffalo on them for a buffalo hunt game:

I applied material for the arrows to stick to:

I really enjoyed developing these props and pieces for the different activities for Provo Parks and Recreations big events. I learned how to work with others to accomplish big projects for major recreation events. I had to get creative and come up with efficient ways to accomplish the tasks at hand.

Here's the description for the requirements for this project from the manual:

You will complete a major capstone project for your internship. Examples of this project include a special event or a new training manual—anything that the agency could not do without your involvement. It should be above and beyond your day-to-day duties. Once you have visited with you supervisor and settled on an idea, send an e-mail to the internship coordinator (Dr. Hill) to receive approval for your project before you begin. You should have settled on a project after just a few weeks at your internship. Once your project is completed, prepare a report for your portfolio. This report should show what you have done more than tell about it. For example, it might be a scrapbook of a special event you organized, the actual training manual you produced, or copies of the weekly newsletter you developed. The report will be included in the internship portfolio.

National Guard Training Hours Email Approval

Dr. Hill,

As you know, I am interning with Provo Parks and Recreation and will be until August when I will be graduating. Being a member of the Army national guard is fun and rewarding but time consuming- especially when I will be in Wendover drilling with my unit for a few weeks in June. That is a considerable portion of the summer when I need to be working toward 400 hours. I will be working with the officers in the unit on planning and executing a mock natural disaster in the Salt lake area. We will be working logistical and medical situations in response to an earthquake. We will be flying (I won't be flying-yet) day and night missions from Blackhawks as well as convoys of supplies and other materials. I am wondering if there is any chance to count a portion of my time drilling to the internship requirement.

Thanks for your help.

Brad Ellertson

Agency Summary

I am participating in an internship this summer with Provo Parks and Recreation at The Center. This report will provide a summery of this agency. I will include three major sections: a background of the agency (their mission, programs, clientele, and facilities), the personnel of the agency (organizational charts, responsibilities, and management culture), and the financial structure of the agency.

BACKGROUND:

First, I will provide information on the background of The Center, Provo Parks and Recreation.

The Center - The Center opened in 2001 and has been growing ever since. It is located at 500 N. Freedom Blvd in Provo. The mission of The Center is to provide the youth, the teens and the community of Provo with a positive environment that encourages social, recreational and educational growth.

The Center used to be a Army National Guard Armory. Now its renovated and painted to be a bit more inviting. The Center offers a place for youth to come after school. The Center has basketball courts, pool tables, a dance room, an art room, a weight lifting room, a skate park, and many organized child, teen, and adult activities and classes to chose from.

The Center encourages all of its patrons to comply with their code of conduct. This code of conduct is based around six core principles: Respect for self, others, and the facility; Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness and Good Citizenship.

Internship Information:

In this work of recreation program planning and organizing, the individual appointed to this position will be required to plan, organize, and supervise special events for the city of Provo. Some examples of these types of activities are parades, concerts, and holiday events. Individuals in this position also need to learn how to prepare advertising to promote the event or program, work within a budget, and prepare and maintain reports and records.

Event preparation involves reviewing, making a master plan, and brainstorming, as well as physical preparation. Reviewing means to start planning far in advance and reading previous event evaluations. Making a master plan helps organize the event planning and makes the execution of the event more smooth and successful. Brainstorming involves doing research and coming up with new ideas for games, crafts, and activities. Physical preparation means going shopping, gathering supplies, and creating decorations.

Other Programs/Facilities:

Within the Special Events branch of the Provo Parks and Recreation agency there are several parts:

Peaks Ice Arena - This ice skating rink is located in Provo. The Peaks Ice Arena has skating, futsal, and hockey programs to suit any skater or athlete. The Peaks Ice Arena had the privilege of being a 2002 Olympic venue with two world class Olympic size ice rinks and two indoor futsal courts.

This arena offers several activities which include public skating, birthday parties, private rentals, broom ball, learning to skate, figure skating, futsal, and ice hockey. The Peaks Ice Arena is home to the Peaks Figure Skating Club, several Utah County High School teams, the Utah Valley University hockey club, and the Brigham Young University hockey club.

Eldred Center - All members of the community 55 years and older are invited to meet with friends at the Eldred Senior Center to enjoy socially enriching experiences, intellectual stimulation, physical fitness programs, educational opportunities, artistic fulfillment, a daily nutrition program, health screening clinic, short tours, billiard games, shuffleboard, library, television, assistance programs, and varied information and referral services.

Membership in the Eldred Senior Center is open to all men and women 55 years of age and older without restriction as to race, religion, creed, sex, national origin, political belief, or income. Members receive a discount on most classes and tours.

The Covey Center for the Arts - The Covey Center for the Arts is named for Sandra Merrill Covey.
In 2007, the Covey Center for the Arts opened its doors with the goal to educate, enrich, endow and entertain. The Covey Center’s 670-seat performance hall hosts the Mayor’s Series for the Performing Arts, which has presented performers ranging from Kenny Loggins and George Winston to events like Bye Bye Birdie and Thriller.

The Brinton Black Box Theater seats 60, and is home to a series of plays and musicals. In addition to these performing spaces, the Covey Center also houses an art gallery, with exhibits that rotate monthly, and three dance studios. Most of these spaces are available for rent, and are much in demand by local performing groups.

Provo Recreation Center and The Veterans Pool -
Because of the Provo Rec Center and the Veterans Pool, there are a variety of aquatic activities for people of all ages to enjoy year round. The Provo Recreation Center Pool is an indoor year round pool and the Veterans Memorial Pool is an outdoor seasonal pool.

Swimming under the supervision of certified lifeguards is a safe and healthy activity that provides many fitness benefits and an enjoyable recreational experience. Aquatic activities include lap swimming, recreational swimming and diving, deep and shallow water aerobics, swimming and diving lessons for ages from 6 months to adults.

PERSONNEL:

Second, I will report on the personnel of this agency.

John Curtis - Provo City Mayor - Mayor Curtis is ultimately in charge of everything that goes on within the city. He is the only elected official in this chain of command.

Roger Thomas - Parks and Recreation Director

Scott Henderson - Assistant Recreation Director

Brian Smith - Recreation Supervisor- Brian is over the Center and its day to day activities to include classes, day camps, youth activities, and the management of these. Financial decisions are made by Brian in order stay within the allowed budget, which as of late has been a challenge.

Whitney Booth - Recreation Coordinator - Whitney is the assistant to the supervisor, she is in charge of the events that Provo city puts on. She is in charge of recreation leaders and interns. She works closely with her supervisor when planning events making sure budgets are accounted for risk management is assessed.

Eric Layland - Recreation Leader - Directly above all interns and volunteers involved with events going on throughout the city. In charge of planning events, coming up with ideas, and creating new activities for events

Melanie Anderson - Recreation Leader - Directly above all interns and volunteers involved with events going on throughout the city. In charge of planning events, coming up with ideas, and creating new activities for events

FINANCIAL STRUCTURE:

Finally, I will report on the financial structure of the agency. Unfortunately, I was unable to gain access to their budget information that they received from city tax payers. However, I do know that they charged admission for two events per year. Those events were the haunted house in October and First Night in December. All of their other activities were free admission. The Center does charge for membership, but this funding does not have an affect on event production, it goes to the city.
